Watch this! The Newsroom

Adding my voice to the chorus of folks recommending Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom. I watched the first full episode this morning on YouTube, and it gave me hope chills. Click here to see it, the embedding is disabled. (Booo!)

Here’s a brief synopsis:

It’s about how Americans have become so divided, in part because of how the media panders to our fears, pitting our worst selves against one another.

If you have a little extra time this weekend, invest it here.

I’m Avoiding You

Apparently I’m having trouble writing about my teeth. They’re so damn symbolic. Ugh. So! Let’s talk about something else for a minute while I regroup.

This makes me laugh. (via BB-Blog)

This makes me cry.

Tell me what makes you laugh or cry, and that way I can use comments as a reward for getting through the dental post. Ready? Go!

Plastic Flowers, the Update

This is a detail of Katy Stone’s “Little Universe (Burst Boom Bloom).” It’s on the wall at Spoon Bar in Healdsburg, which is one of our new favorite places to stop for a glass of wine while Hank naps in his stroller.

They’re hand painted acrylic floral shapes on clear Duralar plastic, nailed to the wall and arranged at different depths to create a nice 3-D effect. So clever. I think it would be cool to attempt a variation on this technique as art for a bathroom.

Here’s a time lapse of the installation:

The Commission Project

Paul Ferney has a studio downstairs from my office, and I pop in occasionally to chat and see what he’s been working on. Right now he’s working on The Commission Project, a series of 100 portraits commissioned by folks like you and me. They’re only $200 each, which is a steal — above is his painting of Hank from a photo taken by my friend Ryan Carver.

If you’d like a portrait of your kid, or your pet, or your backyard swing set, now’s the time to stake your claim. I have a feeling Paul’s schedule is filling up fast.

Mondo Beyondo Online Course

My friends Andrea Scher and Jen Lemen are teaching an online course about dreaming big. I’ll be traveling for the first two weeks, but I signed up anyway because, for me, waiting until something is convenient is as good as deciding never to do it at all.

Andrea is a gifted teacher, and her posts about the concept of Mondo Beyondo have had an impact on me. Almost all of my first Mondo Beyondo list dreams have come true. I don’t know Jen as well personally, but a brief conversation with her the day we met convinced me to let go of all my labor anxieties. I’ve quoted her words to almost every pregnant woman I know.

I have a lot to learn from these two, and maybe you do too. If you’re still working on your Mighty Life List, or if you’re in the never-ending process of editing your list, I suspect this class will be ideal. I certainly can recommend the teachers. Good luck, Andrea and Jen! I can’t wait.
