Watch this! The Newsroom

29th June 2012

Adding my voice to the chorus of folks recommending Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom. I watched the first full episode this morning on YouTube, and it gave me hope chills. Click here to see it, the embedding is disabled. (Booo!)

Here’s a brief synopsis:

It’s about how Americans have become so divided, in part because of how the media panders to our fears, pitting our worst selves against one another.

If you have a little extra time this weekend, invest it here.

I watched it — and appreciated that they used an actual event from a couple years ago to illustrate the point you made. Jeff Daniels is good in it (can’t forget him in Dumb & Dumber, tho), but Brian Kerwin would have been better if he were a couple years younger ;-)

I stayed up entirely too late to watch it the other night. And then I stayed up even later reading reactions to it, and was surprised to see how vitriolic they were. It seems like people are taking McAvoy’s opinions reeeeeeally personally, maybe? I also read some criticism of Sorkin for writing (an?) episode(s?) that centered around real events but with all the knowledge of hindsight. I was surprised by that; I took his use of real events as a really effective way of making clear how much journalism has turned to partisanship and pandering.

I sincerely liked the show, though. There are strong, well-acted characters, great dialogue, a gripping pace, and a whole lot of promise.

I loved it! Many of the criticisms are well founded, but it is so smart I can forgive all of them. The monologue in the first scene had me singing in side. I hope the cast gets that same level of comfort that West Wing had.

I really enjoyed this show. I was hooked by the end of the opening scene when I found myself saying “It’s not” and hearing it echoed back at me. Thanks so much for posting this, Maggie. New favorite show.

Aaron Sorkin could write an instruction manual for a juicer and I would read it. And then I’d read it again. And then I’d pay actual A-list actors cash money to reenact said juicer manual.

It’s not like I disliked you before–far from it. However, this post made me really love you.

Actually yours is the first I’ve seen; many more say the opposite…

I agree with misstraceynolan, Aaron Sorkin can do no wrong in my book. I think once the characters settle into their roles it will be even better!
