We photographed a lot of upscale outfits, so Margaret insisted on one “what I’d throw on to meet you for brunch” set. Fair enough.
The jeans are Gap, shirt is Paul and Joe for Target, and the jacket is Proenza Schouler for Target. She got it on super sale for $6.
This, again, is why I take Margaret with me when I go shoe shopping. She purchased these boots at Paolo in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley.
These are actual Girl Scout patches, which Margaret ordered according to her interests — design, nerdery, color, sewing, cooking, and photography. I said:
-“They just let you order them?”
-“YES! I know. I was kind of scandalized. I guess they figured people old enough to have credit cards have no use for Girl Scout patches.”
-“Wrong!”
-“Dead wrong.”

Jessica, that’s hilarious, but I know what you mean. Margaret and I were both Girl Scouts when we were little (at least I’m pretty sure Margaret was too), and we both tend toward aggressive rules following ourselves. We were shocked that you could just… order badges. It seems so strange.

If you haven’t yet read it, find a copy of Pretty in Plaid by Jen Lancaster. Flip to the chapter where she writes about her beloved Girl Scout uniform, and, specifically, earning the badges for her sash. It’s really quite funny, even if you weren’t a Girl Scout.

Do you suppose Margaret would mind if I plagiarized her Girl Scout badge idea? Because I have a canvas bag that has been wanting some flair, and that would be PERFECT. (I’ll rationalize my badge purchase by only ordering ones that I earned as a kid anyway. That’s not cheating! Right?)

I think that’s because troop leaders design their own activities and decide for themselves what patches apply. You’d think they’d only let the leaders order them, though.

I know of at least one store in my hometown (Canfield’s in Omaha, NE) where anyone can walk in off the street and buy boy scout AND girl scout badges and patches of all kinds. Which I always thought was totally cool.

I seriously want to move to the states, that jacket for $6 (that is like $7 aussie – you can’t buy a pair of undies from Target for that amount).
And I want those badges, I am in a group in Australia called ‘Brown Owls’ which is brownies (did you have them?) for grown ups – and there are badges!
And Pip who runs Brown Owls has a book called ‘Meet me at Mikes’ which has crafty projects in it from herself and various people (like Loubylou) which rocks… and no I am not doing any paid promotion – it is just the most beautiful book I have ever owned!

I recognize that nerdery badge. I earned one in 1981 when I was 8 for taking a programming class in BASIC (I was a nerdy brownie, how about that?). I still have it on my sash… maybe I should do something else with it… HMMM. I’ll not be selling it to you guys though!
