Mighty Thirst: The Neighbor

Warming your hands against your mug is the entire reason for Fall. Take a thermos over next door and settle in for a little gossip.

The Neighbor

– 1/2 shot of Basil Hayden
– a splash of Grand Marnier
– top off with Constant Comment tea from Bigelow
– Agave nectar to taste
– Sprig of bruised rosemary to garnish

Here’s to pumpkin patches, elbow patches, and friends who bring you soup when you’re sick. What are you toasting this week?

Life List Uniforms: Attend the Kentucky Derby

This post is sponsored by eBay. From the new to the hard to find, when it’s on your mind, it’s on eBay.

If you’re wondering how I plan to pony up the cash to open a Swiss bank account, the answer is, ponies! Well technically, horses.

Attending the Kentucky Derby is on my Life List, and mama needs a new pair of shoes. Rousing Sermon, I have my eye on you from under this hot pink double-bow. Gold flats, you can say the same.

PAPA, at Outside Lands 2012

AT&T is sponsoring my coverage of Outside Lands this year, so I get to take photos of a few of their All Access tent performances.

Side venues at festivals are my favorite places to find new music. It’s so nice to see bands up close before a sea of bobbing heads intervenes a few years down the road.

PAPA is a band out of L.A. who describe themselves as American soul music. In addition to being easy on the eyes, they’re smart, so it’s safe to develop a thinking woman’s crush.

These photos are from their performance in AT&T’s All Access tent, and you can see the whole performance, plus a brief interview on U-Verse.

What to Wear to Outside Lands

Hey, if you’re looking for a music festival outfit, I made a Pinterest board of Outside Lands style inspiration. Also, check out the article I wrote last year How to Dress for Outside Lands, which offers practical tips on prepping for San Francisco’s variable climate. And be sure to follow me on Instagram and Twitter to see what people are wearing at Outside Lands this year.

What We Chase

Scenes of Life | Lucie & Simon

What My Son’s Disabilities Taught Me About ‘Having It All’, by Marie Myung-Ok Lee.

When I look at friends and acquaintances, many with perfectly beautiful children and wonderful lives, and see how desperately unhappy or stressed they are about balancing work and family, I think to myself that the solution to many problems is deceptively obvious. We are chasing the wrong things, asking ourselves the wrong questions. It is not, “Can we have it all?” — with “all” being some kind of undefined marker that shall forever be moved upwards out of reach just a little bit with each new blessing. We should ask instead, “Do we have enough?”

Right now, the California Library Association is trying to restore $15.2 million in State funding in hopes of preventing the loss of $16 million in Federal funding. I know how much all of us love books, so please take a minute to write a letter or two in support of restoring funding. All the information you need is here. Let’s do this thing.

Tiny Project: Bourbon Cherries

You know what’s easier than you expect? Making delicious Bourbon Cherries for your cocktails and ice cream sundaes. It’s like fifteen minutes of work before a little wait. Here’s what you need:

• Some cherries
• A cherry pitter
• A canning jar
• Bourbon
• A label (if you’re fancy)

First, you rinse the cherries — durr.

Next you pit the cherries with your trusty cherry pitter. This is the delightful Miss Anna Beth Chao getting all Vanna White with mine, which is called a Cherry Chomper. His name is Nigel, and I love him.

Well done. You pitted those with prejudice.

Now pour some bourbon up in there. Make sure all the cherries are covered.

What? You’re done. The hell, right?

Well actually, you’ll want to store the jar in a cool, dark place, and give it a shake once a day or so for four weeks before you crack it open. But still! So easy.
