Mighty Girl’s Quince

This month marks 15 years I’ve been posting here at Mighty Girl!

I found out about blogging because I was an Associate Editor at Web Techniques Magazine, and someone wrote a sidebar about a Web app called Blogger. When I started, this was a Geocities site with no photos, no name attached (because who knows what dangers lurk on the Interwebs), and mostly tweet-length posts. A link in Jason Kottke’s blogroll crashed my site, so I got my own domain.

Many years before Ev founded Twitter, our magazine paid for a server so his service Blogger could keep existing. Most of the editors had blogs hosted on Blogger, and their eventual acquisition by Google was distant on the horizon.

Then came Flickr, and Facebook, and Twitter, and Tumblr, Instagram, and Snapchat, and Pinterest — all the fun places that make it a little less worthwhile to host your own site.

But fifteen years later, this little URL is still such a nice place to be. I’ve met so many of you through Mighty Girl, and there are even more of you I’ve bookmarked. I check in, follow your narrative, and remember your history. Thank you for still coming by every so often to check in on me too.

Hooray for the Internet! I say hooray.

Pregnancy Update: The Baby!

This is our good, smooshy baby Oslo Boon Ellis.

He is a sweetheart and we love him very much.

He was born last week at around 5 a.m., every finger and every toe accounted for.

He has his brother’s (and his papa’s) good-natured calm, and his mama’s affection for naps.

In other news on the home front, Hank made a rocket ship! A fast one.

As for me, this post will be the only thing I accomplish today that is not is some way related to my boobs.

Can We Change that Copy?

I repackaged my Insulin needles, because my needle phobia was making me unreasonably pissed at having to inject medication into my pregnant belly.  Pbbbbbt! PBBBBBT on you, stupid injections of dumbness and stupidity.

That said, modern medication (and access to it) is an unparalleled gift. I would be terrified without it. And as I have learned in this pregnancy, irritated is far preferable to terrified. So thanks, science! I will never complain about jet packs again.

C’moooooon healthy little baby.

Pregnancy Update: Still Pregnant

Do I want hot chocolate or a pickle? This is what I use my brain for now.

Nausea prevented me from eating much my first trimester, which made me pleasant to be around. A few of the appetizing meal choices I made in that period:

This last one is dinner on Halloween night.

That was a couple days before my appetite started to return, and just before I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Hey-ohhh!

So if you guys want to come over for some unsweetened soy hot cocoa and pickles, party’s at my place.

Very Nice News Indeed

This is the birthday card Brad drew for me this year. I’ve been a little quiet around here lately because I’ve been putting all of my energy into sitting very still so I can keep food down.

This is because we are expecting a baby. A tiny one, who does that thing with the giant yawn that’s still only as big as a thumb print. A little one, who keeps its fists by its face in case of trouble.

Gah! Baby!

The baby is coming in late April, and Hank has told everyone in his class several times over. Other kids have begun requesting siblings from their parents in the interest of fairness, which along with my unmarried status, has made us very popular at the elementary school.

When we found out our baby schemes had worked sooner than expected, I started pulling together Instant Wedding. Finding-a-venue-and-a-dress-and-a-cake-and-calling-everyone-and-bopping-to-the-courthouse-and-doing-this-thing! Then I fell asleep. I have been asleep for several weeks now, so we’re delaying the wedding until we’ve had time to have a baby. Also to procure knitted hats and booties, which said baby can pull off and throw on the ground.

Come out, baby! I cannot wait.
