Hey. You should go to SxSW this year. It’s fun.
I’ve been attending since … 2000? 2001? I forget because of tequila. Anyway, it’s always colder than I expect, and despite my best intentions I never actually return to my hotel room to change for the evening.
Texas is crazy casual, plus hangovers prevent you from ironing. Over the years, I’ve honed a day-to-evening wardrobe perfectly suited to SxSW’s slow but unrelenting pace. If you want to be cute, but super comfortable, and also want to avoid changing when the night comes, you will need the following:
-
Flat boots,
a (preferably sexy) tank top,
a light jacket or blazer,
a scarf,
sunglasses (Ow. Stupid sunlight.),
and one piece of jewelry. (Optional. I always pack something but usually forget I’ve brought it. Apparently bringing a bracelet makes me feel secure, so who am I to deny you, right? Right.)
Following my uniform requirements, here’s some inspiration for what you might wear to Interactive, Film, and Music respectively. See you there, team! Beers on me.

I live in Austin, so I usually leave town during SXSW. But I would stay just to wear that BDG scarf.

I’ll be there this year – hope to meet you finally 🙂 Otherwise I’ll just have to hear stories from Lori M. again 🙂

I’m not going to be there, but wanted to say Hooray! I love when you post on fashion-related subjects. Can we get a new Mighty Closet soon? 🙂

Love the fashion ideas! As someone who feels completely inept at putting pieces together, I always appreciate tips. I won’t be at SXSW, but I hope you have a great time! Austin is so much fun.

My schedule is brutal this year, bc I’m getting off a plane from New Zealand and stepping ON a plane to Austin, landing 12 hours before my session. So, my packing strategy is kind of up in the air.
That said, I usually toss a pair of tights or leggings in my bag to pull on under daytime dresses. And, I dig Target’s Tissue Tees for the same reason – they take up almost no space, but provide another layer for chilly Austin nights.
Couldn’t agree with you more about boots, though my go-tos are Fryes.
{waves hi to Sara}

Levi’s Curve ID jeans are the ONLY jeans I wear! I didn’t buy jeans for years and years because, as a short, curvy girl, jeans were not made for me. Gap jeans came close, but just weren’t perfect. Levi’s Demi Curves are ahhhh-mazing!! I love them!

I’m in SoCal, so my staples are RayBans (either aviators or wayfarers, depending on the occasion), Lucchese boots (black or tan, depending), Lucky jeans, and some kind of easy knit T. Lovin’ that Merriweather jacket!

I love in Austin and will be there…but as a vendor both weekends (I’m a jewelry designer). I’m actually having an issue with what to wear as I have to get dressed up for one of events…hmmm. Hope to run into you if you’re at TxSC or Style X!

I love the tanks! Do you have to go bra-less with them? Is there a secret bra I don’t know about?

I went last year and it was one of the best trips I’ve ever had! Love it Austin. WOuld be going this year if I wasn’t living in Thailand (checking another biggie off the life list!). But it seemed to me that TOMs shoes were the official shoes of SXSW last year. Everyone seemed to have a pair. Glad I brought mine even if it did mean not having footwear that stood out. You do a lot of walking throughout the day, and they are super comfy and stylish. Plus for every pair you buy they give one away to a child in need. Fashion and doing a good deed. It’s totally having your cake and eating it too.

I would *love* to go to SxSW one day, but unfortunately won’t be there this year. But! The Spring Standards will. If you get a chance to see them perform, tell ’em I said hi.
Also, I covet every single pair of boots you posted. Wow.

Yay to flat boots! Also, knit layering dresses that work with and without tights, and with and without a jacket–like this striped number: http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=69886&vid=1&pid=450151&scid=450151022
Maggie, are you speaking this year? If you’re up and at ’em Saturday morning, we’d *love* to see you at the Tech Superwomen: Mentors and Mentees panel. The Mighty Summit (and Mighty brand, in general) offers a compelling example in creating an innovative space to welcome, encourage, and nurture diverse talent–exactly what women need in our broader industry! Ditto Corrin. I like the smooth sole Minnetonka moccasins for ambling around, but that assumes that you’re not worried about people stepping on your toes. Snack recommendation: Upper Crust Bakery on Burnet and the Trey’s Cuisine trailer on Lamar. If you need a pet fix, go to the Humane Society and hang out in the cat rooms for a while. There’s a Bikram yoga studio a couple of blocks from the mega Whole Foods downtown and Barton Springs is good for hangovers. Have fun in my town and be extra friendly to the locals.

Just wanted to let you know that you can make your own hex-nut bracket for a few dollars. http://honestlywtf.com/diy/diy-braided-hex-nut-bracelet/
I’m sure this is th woman selling them learned how…. And is making money/passing it off as her own work. Give credit!

I’m sneaking out of NY to head to SXSW because I cannot imagine not heading to Austin. That said I had to come back to this post to figure out what to wear. And now I know. Thanks, Maggie! See you soon.
