I read somewhere that most lobsters are nocturnal. That sounds like a good, kid friendly explanation.
Much better than, “They’re paralyzed by fear.” π

Maybe they’d eaten too much chocolate and were resting? That’s probably it.

You’re right. He’s suddenly a boy. How did that happen?

They are cold-blooded, (meaning their body temp is a response to local water temp) so they are most likely responding to temperature. The water is probably kept cold so that they don’t have to be fed as much. That also means they don’t move much.

Maybe the crabs were playing a game of underwater freeze tag?

Because, Hank, you are such an amazing, awesome, adorable kid that the lobsters have to stop everything they’re doing so they can look at you. And it’s the truth.

Because they are playing a game of ‘statues’. The first one to move gets it. Literally.

I second the idea that they are responding to the cold water. I just read about how to kill them humanely and the cook recommended to freeze them for a few minutes to put them into a deep sleep.

Like Esther, I’ve been reading in my google feed. I came over to see what the internet had to say about very still crab. The temperature explanation sounds very scientific. The nocturnal explanation sounds kinda cute, yet believable. btw, I suck at Balderdash. =)
