Friday Mixtape

I’ve always wished I knew more about music, and this is part of my Life List project to listen to 1,000 new songs. Right now I’m up to 758, and on Fridays I share some of my new favorites. If you’d like to share some music with me, please send your picks to maggie at mighty girl dot com, and I will listen to them.

Dirty Laundry from Bitter:Sweet

Lost Cause from Beck

Don’t Stop from Brazilian Girls

I don’t love this video, so maybe close your eyes while you listen. Also, I wanted to list Ships in the Night, but couldn’t find a clean recording online (that link is to a lovely live performance).

Wish Someone Would Care from Irma Thomas

The Garden from Mirah

  1. I saw Irma Thomas once in Chicago. Eventually, she was on fire! But not before a long rant about hating men and the pain of menopause. It was like I was trapped on her angry blog for 20 minutes.

  2. You should check out “You’ll Be Bright” by Cloud Cult (actually, their entire album is fantastic) and mash-up artist Girl Talk. Both are really fun.

I’m loving this project so hard.

  3. Hmm, I don’t know if I’ve suggested her before, or if others have (I am short-listed for poorest memory on Earth), but have you heard Julieta Venegas? It’s Spanish rock (some would say pop rock) and it’s just overall great. Even when she’s singing about break-ups, it sounds encouraging!

  4. I love finding some of my favorite songs on your Friday Mixtapes! It gives me a little shock to realize songs that are so integral to my life can be completely new to another person.

  5. I second Stella’s recommendation of Julieta Venegas…which reminds me of my favorite Brazilian singer, the beautiful Marisa Monte, and the pretty pretty duet they did together.
