Six Years of Lovely For Sale

13th April 2010

When I launched Mighty Goods nearly six years ago, it was the very first shopping blog. My friend Doug Bowman designed it over several afternoons at coffee shops that no longer exist. Since then he’s gotten married and had a baby, gone to work at Google, and then left to work at Twitter. Over the years the site and brand have grown, winning several awards — Time Magazine Top 50, and Best Shopping for both Forbes and BusinessWeek — and spawning sister sites Mighty Junior and Mighty Haus. I’m really proud of what we’ve built.

When Mighty Goods launched, online shopping was still in its infancy. We were there when most brick-and-mortar stores only had brochure sites, and we were early cheerleaders for Etsy (Viva!). A few people have offered to buy the sites over the years, but I loved cozying up with my laptop to shop in my spare time. Unfortunately, spare time has been harder to come by since I became a mom and a full-time writer. What started as a hobby has grown into a business — one I no longer have time to maintain properly. The shopping sites have so much more untapped potential; it’s time to find them a better home.

So in the interest of doing that, I’m putting a For Sale sign on the front lawn. If you’d like to acquire Mighty Goods, Mighty Haus, and Mighty Junior, drop me a line at maggie at mightygoods dot com.

For loyal readers of the sites, do not worry one bit. I have a lot of cute stuff in my bookmarks, and all of it is still coming your way. You’ve helped me build an amazing business, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Six years? No way. That cannot be! Where does the time go?

I enjoyed Mighty Goods. Here’s my toast to you and to it.

Awwwww… Maggie. That’s great for you, and a little sad for me (and probably for you too). You’ve been finding us Christmas gifts and Birthday gifts and just because gifts for at least 5 of the six years (I can’t quite remember when I started with MG, other than early.)

Sigh. Find it a good home, yes? A good home with Maggie level taste.

Huh. I thought you made your living from the Mighty sites? I guess not…where do you work as a writer?

Congratulations! While I’m sad that you won’t be at the helm of the Mighty shopping sites for much longer, I’m happy for you that they’ve grown to be so successful! Viva la Maggie!

Aww, congratulations Maggie! You’ve worked really hard to build something fantastic. The fact the you no longer have time for it any more can only be read as a success. Good for you! I’m looking forward to whatever changes occur.

I’m a huge fan of Mighty Goods, so a mighty congratulations to you for the vision and the growth. I know this probably wasn’t an easy decision one, but I look forward to the next chapter for you and for the sites.

I am a huge fan of Mighty Goods as well. I’ve bought a lot of the items you have featured here for gifts. Thanks for six great years!

Wow, while I’ll certainly miss you at the help of Mighty Goods, I’m excited for you and the sale, and am also looking forward to what you do next. I know it will be amazing!

Oh, Maggie! You have single-handedly saved holidays, birthdays and relationships for the past six years of my budding adult life. A million thank yous and congratulations on the next chapter!

Online shopping was in its infancy six years ago? Wow. So I guess the complete restructuring of every brick and mortar company in the six years prior to that was just in anticipation of the real sweeping changes we’ve experienced during your site’s existence (exactly none.)

Maggie, how exciting! Big Congratulations to you on the mighty, mighty success of the sites and on the future, whatever it brings.

This announcement sparked an interesting conversation at my house last night as I tried to explain to the Mr. just what was special and unique about the sites and what this change might mean, strategies for preserving the brand / re-branding the brand, etc. Thank you for the lovely things you’ve introduced us to. Onward!

This is big news. Bittersweet. Congratulations, and best wishes with the new endeavors.

And be sure to buy some ice cream with the earnings. The very best of the best in SanFran ice cream to celebrate.

Congratulations on all of your success, Maggie! I, too, have been here since… well, a long time. Your sites have been an endless source of inspiration for birthdays, holidays and impossible-to-shop-for men in my life. I hope the sites continue in good hands!
