More Life

Just added four more things to the Mighty Life List:

Hear 1,000 new songs.
I want to know more about music, and I want to find easier, more automatic ways to incorporate it into my life. It feels like I have to go through ten steps to find a song I want to hear and listen to it on a device with worthwhile sound quality. I miss my record player. Plus, I’m beginning to feel like I’ve run out of fresh tunes to hum, which feels gross. Fortunately, I already have some friends enlisted to help.

Wear a sequined bikini to Carnival in Trinidad.
This scares the crap out of me. The last time I wore a bikini in public I was sixteen and blinded an entire small town in Mexico. Thank goodness for rum and Karen Walrond.

Go on a night dive with Manta Rays in Hawaii.
Liz wrote that post and it sounded so magic. As does almost everything about the ocean. It’s like visiting outer space.

Make a font.
I’ve always loved hand-painted signs and studying handwriting, and it seems like making a font would be so satisfyingly meticulous. Of course, the urge has only gotten stronger working in the same office with the Typekit team all day.

What have you added to your list recently?

  1. Carnival in Brazil is on my list, but I’m sparing the world me in a bikini.

I just stole Karen’s 1000 portraits idea and added it yesterday.

Try Pandora for new music. It changed my life.

  2. My husband is from Trinidad. Carnival looks so fun but his family has told me it can be really crazy too. I hope to go and “play mas” one year!

  4. I just discovered (a wee behind) Andrew Bird- I am in love with his lastest album, I can’t even tell you the name but it’s the one that came out last month. He reminds me of a mixture of all my faves: Jeff Buckley, Sufjan Stevens, & Bon Iver. They are great for a few songs on your list.

Just added to my list- a girls’ weekend getaway with my best friends. But we have no clue where we should go.

  5. I’ve added nothing to my list, but I’m a few weeks away from crossing one thing off of it. Regarding your list, are you accepting mixtapes? (Oh, fine. It would be a CD.) Send me your mailing address if you’d like one!

  6. Going on a night dive is like visiting the moon. (Or so I imagine, as I’ve never actually been there…). I went on a night dive in Mexico and saw an angry octopus change from red to blue to purple. I saw a fish the size of a small Volkswagon. I saw a sleeping sea turtle, all tucked away in a little cavern. And then when the torches are turned off, the luminescent sea plankton are just trippy.

Thank you for the link to the Hawaii dive. That might have to be added to my list. Manta Ray are just so beautiful!

  8. Pandora is great, but even better is the awesome Minnesota Public radio station, The Current. Go to http://www.thecurrent.com and you can stream it from anywhere. They play lots of indie music plus a little of everything else thrown in, but it’s all good.

  9. I have just realized I do not have a way to email you a mixtape. Sad.

Things I have added to my list lately:

-Get several pairs of high heels that I can actually walk in (and no more that I can’t!)
-Have a custom perfume made for me at a shop in New Orleans and get enough to last the rest of my life
    -Learn to play Backgammon
-Get really good camera equipment and use it
-Teach Jack (my husband) to drive a car

  10. I have suggestion for you since you mentioned the manta ray swim. You should look into swimming with the whale sharks off the northern coast of Australia. They are the gentle giants of the ocean.

  11. try lala.com. you can listen to full length songs, get exposed to music through friends, and download songs. you set up an account with a little money in it and for 10 cents you can add a song to your playlist and listen to it as often as you like. you can also share what you’re listening to on twitter and facebook.

also, i had stay at the peabody hotel in memphis on my list and i just upped that to “be a peabody duck master”

  12. i would highly recommend online listening to KEXP.org out of seattle. i frequently find songs that i love and would never have heard, especially during the world music show – better curated than any i’ve ever heard. so refreshing.

  13. My life list is in my head right now. I need to get it down on paper.

Also, that photo? Nothing like a live band with horns! I really want to hear the music that is coming out of those horns. Where do I click?

  14. Well, I suppose first things first, I created my own list last fall – I call it my Go, life, go! list and I’ve started crossing things off of it already. It feels awesome!

    Thank you for the inspiration!

Secondly, may I recommend the following songs to you (I made you a playlist). I also recommend grooveshark (which I used to make the playlist) -it’s free and spectacularly awesome and does all the stuff pandora and last.fm do, only without the number of plays limits and a much better music library – I haven’t stumped it yet.

  15. To help you with the song quest, here is a link to my all time favorite get happy songโ€”from an Italian pop band you’ve likely not heard of. I discovered it fifteen years ago, and ever since, whenever I hear it it makes me want to bounce around the house happy (very good for cranky grey days). Maybe it will for you too.

Looking forward to that Mason font!
