Redesign Mighty Girl? Check.

1st July 2009

So we’re already crossing off my first Mighty Life List item courtesy of Intel*:

Redesign Mighty Girl!

I tried to find a little trumpet sound to link here, but to no avail. So we’ll just have to use our imaginations. Ready? TA-DA-DA-TAAAAAAAAAAA!

Good work everyone.

The new design makes me seem so serene, doesn’t it? Peek behind the curtain and you’ll find me eating potato chips for dinner at 2 a.m., having left the shower without rinsing conditioner out of my hair. This morning, my pillowcase looked like I’d used it to line a platter of fried chicken.

I think the site is channeling some of Helen Jane’s even keel-ed-ness. I knew we’d have to do everything ludicrously fast, so I wanted to work with someone soothing. When I first asked her, she was a little leery.

She thought the process might be unpleasant.

But she does like designing things.

And then she realized what she could charge for a four-week turnaround.

Thanks to Intel, I could actually afford to pay her. She was worth every penny.

Thanks, lady!

Anyway, if you haven’t yet, please poke around and let me know what you think. The categories may seem hinky, because I haven’t had a chance to comb through all ten years of content yet. For now, I’m thinking of the site as a home that gives me room to grow.

As for the other life-list items I’ll be crossing off, you’ll know more in the next few days, but I want to keep some of them a surprise. Also, lots of you have been asking how I chose. The answer is, Intel offered me a timeframe and a budget, and that helped me shape a plan. It’s a mixture of grand things and small, happy things.

I want to do everything, but I also need enough time to savor it. The process has already taught me a lot, but we’ll talk about that later. For now, enjoy the new site while I nap. Thank you for all the incredible comments. You’re all right.

*What’s going on here? Intel is making my site more interesting by sponsoring my life list over the next few months. Next week, I’m going on a Space Shuttle with the Rockettes!

I love the new design, especially the colors (and the My Life So Far category). Too cute. Great start to mighty life list sponsorship!

  2. Ellie

The new site looks great. I just wish the full blog entries appeared in my Google Reader.

  3. Mau

I like it. The M is mighty indeed.

It looks fresh, clean and readable.

One oddity is that if the top banner doesn’t get loaded, it looks as if something is missing… which it is… but… anyhow. I’ll just be quiet.

    Maggeh, Congratz on the redesign!

  4. Brooke

Strangely, the images within the entry are about an centimeter wide by a centimeter tall. But I love how it looks! I second the request for full entries on the RSS feed to google reader.

  5. Callie

What Brooke said — the images are miniscule. Could it just be an incompatibility problem with my office’s ridiculously unupdated version of IE?

  6. ana

i just have one little complaint. on safari the “all play and no work” ad shows up on top of your mighty life banner, freezes mid frame and then goes nowhere. strange placement, strange behavior.

I love the re-design – clean and clear and easy to read. This couldn’t have happened to a better blogger, I can’t wait to read all about your adventures. I know you will share the joy and excitement with us, and I am looking forward to living vicariously !
(good god. I sound like a teacher’s pet.)

beautiful redesign – can’t wait to poke around! I’m feeling more serene and organized too…must. not. look. away…

  9. Kim

Love the new site! Once upon a time, you were a secret I kept under wraps. Selfish, yes. However, your impending fame has compelled me to share you with my friends, so that I can say “I knew you when… ”

Ana/MAC users – one word: Firefox

It looks great! Today I clicked around and read Hank’s birth story. Then I cried at my desk. I might be hormonal but anyway, site looks rad!

Maggie it’s lovely. I am so happy that you are being given such an amazing opportunity. You deserve it!

    Just a few comments:

I think the font size for the posts is pretty small, though I’m the only person to mention it. It’s not a big deal. I can always zoom in on my browser.

Three posts to an archive page seems a little scanty to me. I was surprised I became annoyed so quickly by how often I had to click “Older Posts.” I can also work on fixing this one myself by becoming less crotchety. :-)

And finally, someone on the first little post about the redesign mentioned that there wasn’t enough distinction between comments, and I agree. I see the little gray lines but they are little…and gray, so the comments end up looking like it’s just a lot of white space.

I really like the new header! The ‘M’ is Mighty Girl-worthy.

(I’m never sure if I should say anything about redesigns. I have no expectation that anyone cater to my whims, and, let’s face it, I’d read your blog if it looked like a GeoCities page, circa 1997. Thanks, Maggie.)

Love the new design! And congrats on all of the wonderful things happening in your life. I love to hear the “dreaming big” success stories. Way to go!

  14. Emily is cute! I love the header!!

I feel like an idiot when I say, where are your links? You think I would have bookmarked them by now if I loved them so much. ha.

Cheers to you for getting so many things accomplished!

Hey – I know a Rockette who is super cool and very sweet. She comes to the Sacramento area quite often – we could plan a little shopping trip. :)

I work at Intel (have for the past 13 years) – and I think it’s really awesome that Intel is doing this (although – I’m a little bummed it’s not me. :P)

  16. maddy

Congratulation! On the new design and the fairy godmother!
I love the new design, even the way the comments are seperated.

But is it just me or are the photos showing up in minature sizes?

  17. Helen Jane

Yep, I can’t figure out the image size thing in older IE browsers — except when I refresh, it goes away. Any developers want to jump in and help on this one?

And thanks for your patience, we’re still fiddling and fixing and linking all up.

Emily, my links are under the blogroll link, which you’ll find at the bottom of the page on the far right.

This is AMAZING! I love it! Great work ladies…hard to believe that my frequent visits to Mightgirl will be now even more enjoyable, but I think they will.

  20. greta

love the new design! love the new header! my only complaint is that the header is so big that (coupled with the big ad below it) i have to scroll down before i can read any of your posts. but that is my own pet peeve, and really, i love the new fresh look!

  21. amanda

Gorgeous, I’d expect nothing less. Or, perhaps I should say, I would expect this kind of superior lessness from you.

Can’t wait to read along as you devour more from life!

  22. Kris

Call me crazy but I liked the old design better, not that I don’t appreciate or recognize all the hard work that went into the new design. I just preferred the compact layout of the old design. To me, and this is just my unsolicited 2 cents, the header with the new logo and images/topics is far too big and takes up precious ‘above the fold’ real estate. Your readers with lower resolution and or small screens laptops will have to scroll to get to the main content. Also, your advertisements above the main content area and in the right sidebar appear in IE7 & Safari4 but not FF3. I’m sure you’re working out all the kinks, just thought I’d let you know. (it’s the quality assurance geek in me)

  23. Nicole

Let me know if you need help planning your trip across the USA! I’ve been planning mine forever, and just haven’t had the chance to go. I keep saying that I am going to quit the job I don’t like anyway, take off in my Honda, start a blog and just do it.

    What an opportunity you’ve received.

Congratulations on a great looking site, I can’t wait to see updates on your adventures!

  24. shan

here’s how it looks on my end… pretty, nice and clean, but loads of wasted space?
    (i’m on mac, firefox)

aha whups, i had adblocker on…
here’s what it looks like in safari… looks like the top ad is running into your first column

(sorry for the annoying comment, i’m a web designer)

  25. vanessa

I think I’ve said this before, but if the ‘gather a group to blow bubbles on the Golden Gate Bridge’ makes the sponsored list, I hope you open the invitation. I’ll be there.

  26. betsy

love the design. love your life list. super happy for you!
anal about typos: “arm summer night”

  27. rebecca
