Life List Inspiration from Go Mighty

This is Kelly Knight’s first dahlia.

One of the best things about poking around on Go Mighty is seeing the patterns emerge. Right now, the site feels like a big “Why don’t we?”

Dance
– Grow flowers or just keep plants alive
– Do something grand

And a whole lot of us would like to conquer a fear. Over the years, I’ve learned that using my list to conquer fears has one of the biggest impacts on my life. It’s surprising how much brain space fear reserves, maybe because of the energy we spend in avoiding thinking about the things that scare us.

In considering what I’m still afraid of, I realized I have a ludicrous, palm-sweaty fear of the group sports I played in Jr. High. I’ve joked about this before, but damn, you guys. Volleyball, dodgeball, kickball? How do I still get cold sweats thinking about doing these things as a grownup?

I think I always just thought I’d get over these things, but they seem to linger until I take active steps to shake them. Which frankly, sounds like the worst.

How about you? What scares you as a grown up? Any fears you expected to have “gotten over” by now?

Go Mighty is a Life List community for doers. Join in, why don’t you?

Outside Lands, What to Wear

Outside Lands is one of my favorite music festivals, but it’s kind of a pain to dress for it. I know you want to look cute, but it’s cold here. Except when it’s hot mid-day. Before it gets cold again.

Anyway, here are a few links that will help you figure out how to dress for maxiumum comfort, style, and practicality. See you there!

I Made This Project, Update and Free Stuff

Universal truth: People who make stuff are preferable to people who fail to make stuff.

We’re in our final round of the I Made This Project on Go Mighty. Add the tag #imadethis to a story on Go Mighty, and then share your project on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. We’ll enter you for a chance to win this $400 package:

SIX-PACK FRAME CINCH

Once a generation an invention comes along that shifts the dominant paradigm. Such is the Six-Pack Frame Cinch created by the husband and wife team at Walnut Studiolo. Where was this when I was in college? You guys are geniuses.

BOOK PLATE STAMP

This vintage typewriter stamp is handmade by Meagan Lewis of Brown Pigeon. She carves her custom stamps from rubber. You can use yours as a bookplate starter, or to stamp the cover page of the novel you’re writing.

MAKER STAMP

Customize your handiwork with this stamp from Cathie at Ampersandity, who does her own hand-lettering and calligraphy.

LIMITED EDITION POLAROID
Ace Hotel Polaroid Camera
Polaroid cameras let you make a tiny little something in seconds. So good. This one was created in partnership with The Ace Hotel.

EPIPHANIE CAMERA AND LAPTOP BAG

Finally, our photographer friend Maile Wilson designed this Epiphanie Camera Bag which accommodates a DSLR, lenses, and your laptop or tablet. I use mine constantly.

So share what you’re making on Go Mighty with the tag #imadethis. When you do, we’ll enter you for a chance to win. I’ll share some of my favorite entries here, and we’ll announce the winner on August 30.

Also, you have a little glitter on your face.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The movie irritated me, but I hadn’t read the book since college, and couldn’t remember much about it. It was strange reading my old copy where I’d underlined a bunch of passages that don’t resonate with me any more, and every reference to color — I must have been working on a paper.

Newsflash, The Great Gatsby is terrific. The kind of book that makes you want to find the author and grin stupidly in his face.

The best parts of The Great Gatsby:

Conduct may be founded on the hard rock or the wet marshes, but after a certain point I don’t care what it’s founded on. When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever.

Go Travel: 10 Things To Do in Seattle, and Roooooad Trip

The last time I was in Seattle, I spent a lot of time in the company of bearded men. I’m driving back soon for Bumbershoot and PAX, so when Ella Dorband offered to put together her favorite stops for Go Mighty, we took her up on it.

10 Places You Should Visit in Seattle

Though I’ve been a few times, I still feel like a relative Seattle novice. So if you have any other Seattle musts, or anywhere you think I should stop along the way up the coast, please let me know in comments.

Small Differences Between Paris and Home

• Each egg in a dozen is stamped with an individual expiration date.

• It makes waiters happy when you linger over food.

• Overall, the men here seem very confident, almost arrogant. There’s a lack of hesitance that I find startling. As a woman walking alone on the street, they look you up and down, ask you to go for coffee at the slightest provocation (like say, accidental eye contact), and all of them talk about romance. The cab driver, “Paris is for romance!” The shop owner, “Are you married? Paris is for romantic!” The waiter sets my paté down, and indicates that the chef has arranged two half-slices of baguette in the shape of a heart, “We are so romantic!” he jokes. Then he sets down an extra set of silverware, and says, “It might be too much food for one” and raises his eyebrows.

Life List Inspiration from Go Mighty

Photo by Sharon who wants to enjoy every moment of her life in NYC. You can see more photos from her latest adventure at 5 Pointz here. Worth it.

I like the way Liz is using Go Mighty to keep track of this goal.

Bonnie is taking this on Haruki Murakami-style.

I love it when being a part of Go Mighty leads to an in real life collaboration. Megan and Amy met up in Chicago to cross something off their Life Lists. The outing involved chickens and a local celebrity.

August, you’re off to a good start.
