I Cut Off My Hair

I cut my hair.

And I love it. Don’t you love it? Yay!

In the few days since, almost everyone who has seen me asks me why I did it. “Why? Why? WHY?”

Um. It was too long?

I’m not emotionally attached to my hair, it’s not symbolic of anything for me. I wasn’t recently dumped, I didn’t come to a profound decision about the direction my life is taking and decide to do something radical. The truth is, my hair grows fast, and I don’t get to the salon enough, so it seemed like a good idea to go short in the likely event that I don’t cut it again for another year.

Huge thanks to Casie Norris from the Lunatic Fringe Salon in Salt Lake City, she translated the photo I brought in of St. Vincent perfectly. And thanks to Jordan for the rec.

  1. Looks awesome! There’s nothing better than a haircut! I hate the mentality of WHY did you cut it?! Eh, it’s hair. It grows back, people!

  2. Looks great!

I’m also a lazy salon goer, so I tend to go short when I do get it cut precisely so I don’t have to go back for a while if I don’t want to.

I’m about damn tired of the long hair hangup this culture’s had for the last decade or two. I blame all the Princesses.

  3. Hooray for you! I love it, and the stylist NAILED it. High five, fellow curly girl. High effing five.

(This new style also makes me realize that a friend of mine looks an awful lot like you. I didn’t see it before, but now? Wow.) (This is a compliment on both sides, as you are both lovely.)

  4. All those “why” askers are nuts — it’s fabulous!!! Love love love. I tend to wait forever between haircuts, too, and my favorite side effect of that laziness is the weightless feeling when all that heavy hair is gone. So light and freeeee!

  5. I was just thinking how St. Vincent it looked, and bam! there you were at the end, bringing your reference picture to the salon. Congrats on a cut well chosen.

  6. It looks great! Please say you donated the cut off length – it looks like it was more than long enough! (I admit to a little bit of bias since I grew mine out for donation – about a year ago got it cut and sent it to Pantene because they use donated hair to make wigs for people with cancer.)

  7. Oh it looks fantastic!! I have been growing a mess of curly wild hair on my head and you have inspired me to chop it like I was thinking of, thanks!!

  8. I love it! And the thing that’s great about hair is that it grows – so I am a firm believer in cutting your hair for no reason other than you want to. Way to go!

  9. I normally prefer long hair, and love your hair in particular, but I must say that this cut really suits you. You look great!

  10. LOVE IT!! I am a big fan of impromptu haircuts – bold ones. I feel just the same way you do – my hair is not a symbol of who I am so I cannot be reduced to tears by a bad hair cut. It grows back 🙂

  11. Very cute, and it’s not that short anyway!

And I agree with the above poster who asked about the frames. I want them too….

  12. YESSS!! Looks utterly fantastic! When I cut my hair off last summer, it was glorious. I had forgotten, though, how COLD the neck gets in winter! Plenty of excuses to wear cute scarves.

  13. Way better. Now, time to dump those huge, ugly glasses. Sorry to be blunt, but they age you by like 15 years. Get lighter frames!
