Friday Mixtape

I’ve always wished I knew more about music, and this is part of my Life List project to listen to 1,000 new songs. Right now I’m up to 441, and on Fridays I share some of my new favorites. If you’d like to share some music with me, please send your picks to maggie at mighty girl dot com, and I will listen to them.

These first three are via Caro J. Thanks, Caro!:

“I Sing I Swim” by Seabear
Icelandic band. Sample lyric, “Wash your face in the lake, you’ve got a diamond under your skin.”

“Quiet” by Non Tiq

“Don’t Save Me” by Marit Larsen
There just aren’t enough upbeat breakup songs.

“Feeling Good” by Nina Simone
This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this song, but it’s a favorite and I liked this video. It was a class assignment by professor Gail Anderson, who asked students in the SVA MFA Design program to create a music video using just type and typographic elements in black and white.

“Cry Me a River” by Julie London

  1. I loved “Feeling Good” when I heard it in Six Feet Under. Damn I miss that show, I discovered a lot of new music through that show!

Do you like Stars? I’ve been listening to the “The Five Ghosts” a lot lately. They opened with it — the entire album — at Williamsburg Music Hall last month. It was amazing live, but the produced version has more depth. I love the layers and harmonies — they really did a fabulous job with the production.

Dead Hearts at 2:49 is worth the entire album, definitely worth the #442 spot on your new songs list.

  2. Aaaarggg! There is only one Marit Larsen song on iTunes. It is not “Don’t Save Me.” On first listen, I thought it was cute. Something made me come back today and listen again. I like it and would buy the song. Anyone know where I can legally buy it without ordering an imported CD?
