This photo makes me so happy. It’s the quintessential traveling-with-the-girls shot.
Anyway, here’s an example of how some very slight changes in accessories help you stretch your travel wardrobe. You can dress for a day of sightseeing, and then just make a few changes for dinner without packing a separate outfit. Laura’s Gap flats and her black sundress from Urban Outfitters both pack down to almost nothing.
My lord, I love this hat from Urban Outfitters. I want to see her toss it jauntily in the air Mary Tyler Moore style. Laura Mayes, you’re gonna make it after all.
Laura’s oversized vintage locket is from Uncommon Objects in Austin. She’s the only person I know who has actual photos in her locket. This makes me feel that she can be trusted. Laura would never read your diaries while she’s house sitting.
Here Laura swapped the sunglasses and hat for a felt headband from Saks and a pair of shell earrings from Claire’s. The effect is slightly dressier, and now we can head out to share a bottle of wine. Let’s do.

When repeating outfits I’m afraid of being grungy. Febreeze will help stretch out the freshness, but will I still be percieved as grungy by wearing the same stuff over and over? Are people really ok with this?
Or are you washing and air drying overnight in hotels?

When you travel with those cute-but-hardly-there shoes, don’t your feet hurt after you spend all day walking around? Travel shoes are a mystery to me… the best shoes for walking all day are comfy padded hiking boots, but those are not the best shoes for, well… anything else. Including looking nice.

Liz, when my clothes get grungy, I do wash in the shower and air dry, especially if I’m in a big city with lots of filth. Many hotels even have drying lines in the shower for this.
Eileen, my feet don’t hurt as long as the flats are rubber soled. And in the fall, flat knee-high boots are great for travel and come with lots of support. You can even put in arch supports if they don’t have them. If you’re having trouble with foot pain, try a mary jane with higher sides so you can add unobtrusive arch support.
