Turning You On

Did you know it was possible to get blisters from a support garment? Like, long, water-filled girdle blisters across your back? The kind where you wake up, and something on your back itches, so you go to scratch it, and your hand comes away wet? Did you know this?

Yeah. Me neither.

  1. …Wow. Actually, a week ago I’d have said I didn’t know that, but I wore a strapless dress for the first time ever over the weekend (bridesmaid) and that thing stabbed and rubbed all kinds of places. I didn’t get blisters but I did get bruises from things like the eyehook on top of the zipper. Gah.

Actually my dream is someday finding the elusive comforatable and supportive and attractive undergarment. Saddly I have yet to find it but…

  6. I stupidly wore an untested sports bra during my first half marathon. Seams and consequently blisters in rather unfortunate places.

  8. Ouch!

Reminds me of the evil spider bit I obtained in the Czech Republic that exploded while I was laying in bed….

    Enough grossness.

    Hope you feel better.

  9. Oh great. Just gret. Next you’re going to be telling me that you can get blisters from other feminine widgets. Like vibrators.

  10. Never wear Spanx with a hole to walk Greenlake in Seattle. I am now sporting a large, painful blister on the inside of my thigh. Yes, it was a solid 2.8 miles of rubbing and my only comfort now is wearing a bandaid for the last two days. It is a Batman bandaid, at least I can fantasize through my pain.

  11. Wow, I did not do that. I pinched myself by way of bra and it left a huge red bruisey looking thing. But never a blister

  12. Here’s a tip which is also the ugly little secret of long distance power walkers. Slather with KY Jelly. Yes, it’s gross, but it absolutely prevents blisters. And don’t confine yourself to the obvious places like under your arms. The ridge of your backbone, the top of your hip, oh just EVERYWHERE.

  13. I was wearing a girdle because I was wearing a vintage dress and I wanted it to lay right. Most of the 50s dresses are made to fit women wearing girdles and bullet bras.

  15. True Story: I once went to bed lying on a heating pad (low heat!) with my bra on (oops!) and did the scratch-scratch-itchy-back-WET-FINGER! routine the next morning.

Note to self and all readers of this comment:

heating pad + metal hook on bra-strap + pressure & time continuum = blister on back!

  16. I remember using lots (and lots) of ‘dusting powder’ in the 50’s and early 60’s to prevent rashes and blisters from undergarments. I wish I had known about “Caldesene” Protecting Powder back then . . . I’m sure it would have worked better than “Cashmere Bouquet”.

  20. I actually did know that – I had the same issue with thigh high nylons. Due to antiquated dress code, I had no wear nylons to work. I through that I was developing an allergy – maybe they were just the wrong size…
