He’s here!

15th February 2007

Henry Martin Mason, originally uploaded by MaggieMason.

Hey everybody, we had a baby! A tiny, pink baby!

His name is Henry Martin Mason, but you can call him Hank.

I went into labor February 11 at 2 a.m., and he was born around noon that day — 8 lbs. 2 oz., and 21 inches long. I had a really good labor, and as you can see, he’s pretty much the sweetest baby ever.

I’ll tell you more later, after we’re a little less dazed. For now, thanks for all the happy wishes and strong support throughout my pregnancy. I can’t tell you how much I’ve appreciated you guys in the past few months.

Hank is one exceptional baby, and I wish you could snuggle him. He even smells soft.

You’ll be pleased to know that Heather’s pictures from your hospital room came up on flikr’s interesting photos of the day on Monday I think. I recognized you immediately and was like “Haaaay. I know her! I read her blog. Awesome!” Congratulations!

  2. Megan

Hooray for Hank! (Is it weird that I kind of hope he stays that pink?) Congratulations on your little bunny!

  3. David

Congratulations to you both (or three!)
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed following your – sometimes comical – pregnancy (non-stalkingly you understand. . . ) through mightygirl and wish you all the very best for the future – enjoy it before he grows up too quickly!

  4. bandick

I’m so confused. The ticker fish says no baby for three more days. Just goes to show how unreliable fish are…

    Congratulations, Mighty Family!

  5. jana

    Awesome! Congratulations!

And I must tell you that Henry was our boy name, if Charlotte turned out to be a he instead of a she.

Seeing his adorable little pink new baby-ness brought back memories of Charlotte when she was born, too. She weighed about the same (8 lbs 11 ozs) and was 21 inches, too.

  6. Sandi

He’s SO cute! He even looks like he smells soft. I’d love to snuggle him! The rewards of parenting are many, and this is the first of them. Congratulations!

  7. Judy

I am so happy for you!! I just saw and heard the heartbeat on our little peanut about an hour ago. We’ve been having some early scares the last couple weeks. Get this – if ours is a boy he will be Henry Merrill the 5th. But grandpa is Hank and daddy is Henry, so I think he might be stuck with Merrill as a nickname.

Your Hank is just perfect!! Thank you for sharing him with us. This is the first day I feel safe being excited about ours. Seeing your little guy makes that so much easier!

  8. Heather

I am a long time reader, first time poster. Henry was born on my son’s first birthday! Yay! A marvelous day!

  9. Karen

Congratulations! He is so beautiful! Makes me all clucky and gushy.

    Welcome, Welcome little Hank! :)

Many kisses and blessings on your family

  10. jackie

yay for the new little mason! he’s just beautiful, and i am terribly jealous and happy for you guys! and let me just say, as a lover of yarn, i think hank is an awesome name!

  11. cj coppola

You and your husband are radiant! If only you could bottle that kind of joy. Congratulations on a job well done.

  12. Ken

    Congratulations, Mighty Girl!
That’s a mighty fine baby there, both the greatest joy and the greatest responsibility in life. I wish you all the best.

Here now, from a much older parent (me), a haiku about the road before you:

    Soft is the baby
So warm and loving to hold
    Oh no, the teen years

  13. Sarah

Welcome, Hank! You are a mighty baby!

Best wishes. And that dazed feeling? Well, get used to it because it’s going to be here for a while.

  14. Mo

You know, I usually can’t make out this parental resemblance that people are always going on about until the kid is about a year and a half. But this picture has a lot of Bryan. That’s gotta count for something.

  15. Quyen

Now the fun begins! Congratulations, good to see that everyone is healthy. Hank is beautiful, I love the name, and I wish you all much happiness.

  16. Berecca

    Maggie and Brian,

Congratulations on your lovely little boy. I am an Aussie reader, who loves your writing, photographs, and humour. Hank is just beautiful, I got all teary looking at your photos of him, especially the family shot. Welldone!

  17. jessica

People will say sleep when the baby sleeps, but it’s so hard. I often found myself staring at our little girl whenever she would fall asleep in the first weeks she was home – and six months later, I still find myself absolutly mezmorized by her and unable to stop staring. They are the most amazing creatures, these babies, aren’t they? Hank is beautiful. Congratualtions. Now the real fun begins!

  18. seejanemom

Oh, and that bear with the gun? (LOVE that image!)…I think you will find him the least of your adversaries to come. As a mother, you slowly grow a whole NEW set of senses. Once that little piece of your heart is set free to walk about among the big dangerous world, you approach it ALL in a WHOLE NEW WAY.

I became a mother twelve years ago today, in fact. And every year on his birthday I intentionally hold him in my arms, bless his spirit and pray for just one more year of strength to be the best mother I can be. It is a birthday tradition that started the moment he was laid wet and wiggly in my arms, and it continues now that he is almost a HEAD taller than I am(at 12!).

There is NOTHING like a SON to hold you in his big strong arms and love you. Nothing.

CONGRATULATIONS MAGGIE. Welcome to the sisterhood.

  19. amanda

I can’t decide if I am more in love with his upper lip or his perfect little nose. His eyes are exquisite as well. Good job Hank’s parents, good job.

  20. Flaurella

Welcome to the world, Master Henry Martin Mason. I wish you a beautiful, joyful long life. What a handsome young man you are! Congratulations to your family.

  21. Jill

Have you ever seen a baby so not fussed or disturbed about their entrance into the world. He looks so calm and chill.

Congratualations!! And welcome to the world Hank. You’ve got a good strappin stromg name to carry you through.

  22. Melissa

Congratulations, Hank! You picked great parents!

Here’s hoping the next weeks bring sleep, snuggles, and smiles.

  23. nadarine

save all those snuggles for yourself & Bryan: you both deserve much soft-smelling-babyness without having to share!

    oh, my ovaries just twitched.

  24. Andrew

A bit of birthday trivia for you and Hank. He shares his with Simpsons creator Matt Groening! (And my friend’s daughter, which is really the only reason I know when Matt Groening’s birthday is…) So, ya know, he’s got that goin’ for him.

Congratulations. It’s so much work, and so much more fun. You’re gonna melt when he laughs at you for the first time.

  25. Sara

Congratulations to your happy family of three. How lovely! How wonderful, as well, that you had a good labor. Enjoy each moment.

  26. tawnytoy

congrants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he is PERFECTION!!!!!!!!!!! SO YUMMY AND CUTE
rest a lot and God Bless you and your family

  27. Angela

Delurking to say “Congratulations!” He was born a day earlier than our youngest (who turns 2 in a few minutes).
I will share with you the advice that my mom gave me when I was a brand-new mom, dazed and confused and utterly freaked out: “He will teach you everything you need to know.”
Your life is about to be turned upside-down in the most magical, freakish, awesome way. Enjoy.

  28. colleen

Oh, Maggie and Bryan, I’m SO happy for you!
Curious about the reasons behind “Henry”, but I’m guessing it’s a family thing. (Too many Thomases, perhaps?) Big congrats! He’s gorgeous!!

  29. Jen

oh congrats! What a cutie! Makes me excited to meet our little girl in a few weeks… I’m glad to hear your labor was good as well!

  30. mihow

Congratulations! And yes, as someone who is terrified of going into labor in 5 months, please explain (in detail) how awesome your labor was. And what you think you did to make it that way. :]

  31. Sandra

Congratulations to you both on the birth of your beautiful son! He shares a birthday with my Mum, who is a fantastic lady. So I am sure he will be a fantastic young man!

  32. Sarah

Oh my gosh, he is adorable! Congratulations!!!
Not only is he pink and perfect and darling, but you can tell from his features that when he is 45 he is going to be one good looking dude!
And I mean that in a totally non-creepy way.
    Welcome Hank!

  33. Anne

I’ve been hounding MightyGirl for a couple weeks now waiting for the big day…congratulations! I got choked up seeing Hank’s beautiful shiny pink self. I’m so glad all went well and that the Masons are healthy and happy.

  34. Bani

Aaawwww look at the babba! He’s very very adorable! Be sure to tell us all later what “a really good labour” entails more precisely… :P Blow him a little bellyfart from me.

  35. CHIRKY

A tiny, tiny pink baby! Welcome, Hank! (Am I getting ahead of myself by wondering when he’ll have his own website?)

(Okay, yes. That WAS a bit overboard.)

  36. Tammy

Congratulations. He’s absolutely gorgeous. And I love the name Henry. As the mom to a Sam, I’m a big fan of the old-tymey names.

Have decided I would fight a bear for this child. A bear with a gun.

This made me laugh out loud. On the third night after Sam was born, I was lying in bed and watching him sleep in my arms (FYI, you’ll never spend as much time just staring at another human being as you you will at your children), and I had this sudden crazy hormonal surge of maternal protectiveness that made me feel absolutely ferocious and reduced me to tears at the same time. I still get weepy when I think about it. Such as right now.

P.S. This crazy protectiveness doesn’t go away, but you eventually get a slightly better handle on it. At first, though, you’re all Drew Barrymore from the beginning of Firestarter. But I digress. Mazel tov!

  37. Katherine

Oh that? Was my ovaries exploding. Sorry. He’s just so cute, I can’t even stand it. Congratulations, Mighty Girl!

  38. Dmom

Congratulations!!! He’s the cutest little baby boy I’ve ever seen that is for sure (I can say that because I don’t have a boy..{;o))

    Sleep when baby sleeps…seriously!

“May your moons always be full,
    your starts always be bright,
may your home be FILLED with laughter
and your steps always be light!!”

  39. jr

I’m a daily lurker on your site (I started visiting a while ago when I saw you mentioned on Heather[dooce]’s site), and just wanted to wish you a huge “Congratulations!!” Being a momma ROCKS! Have fun! :)

  40. JC

Congratulations, Mason family! I’m single, not even dating, and Henry Martin is the name I have picked out for my own future little man. Henry just because I love the name, and Martin for my grandpa. Glad to see the names work together someplace other than in my own head. He’s beautiful, Maggie. Best wishes to all of you.

  41. raych

stopped by for the first time (though i’ve heard of you often) and saw the picture of your baby, thought the ‘henry…originally uploaded by maggie’ was a clever pun about how you ‘uploaded’ him into the world. kept perusing your posts, found other pictures with similar labels that blew my pun theory out of the water. found other things to laugh at here that didn’t make me question that last martini (or 3).

  42. Mick

Congrats to the both of you! What an adorable little guy! ::sighs:: Aren’t baby toes just the cutest things on the planet? They are like puppies wrapped in giggles with baby ducks on top.

  43. Jeni A-W

Congratulations M & B! He is just beautiful! Welcome to this world Hank we’ve been waiting for you!

  44. Auntie Raina

What??!!?!! It’s a good thing I just happened to go on your blog or I might NEVER have found out! I thought I was on your “call list”! He is absolutely gorgeous! Can’t wait to meet little Hank! Much love to the three of you!

  45. Mary Tsao

A belated congratulations! Glad to hear your L&D went smoothly. Good luck with breastfeeding, sleeping, adjusting, and all of that good stuff. Let the fun begin.

I think you’ll find that exploring The City with baby (then toddler) in tow will introduce you to all kinds of things you never before knew existed. e.g., The new Westfield mall has a great family room for breastfeeding and/or relaxing with a whole row of changing tables and dads are okay to be in there, too. Just a tip!

    Have fun!

  46. Jen W.

I don’t think I’ve ever commented, but I have read your site for awhile. Just wanted to say congratulations on Henry. He’s very cute!

  47. Britgirl

Love your blog and sites, wanted to send my congrats on Henrys arrivial. hes just ADORABLE! May he sleep soundly for you tonight;)

  48. Cathy

I have been lurking for awhile on your site (came over from Mighty Goods). I wanted to say congratulations to you and your husband on your beautiful baby boy. You definitely made pregnancy seem less frightening (I don’t have any kids yet). Thanks!

  49. Danielle

De-lurking here. Congratulations on your beautiful child! Ahh, I can’t stand it I want another one! Hank. LOVE IT! Exclamation points galore from the east coast!

  50. Shelley Noble

He’s beautiful. And how wonderful to hear you had a good labor! Many blessings to you and your new little family.

  51. roxanne

Congratulations – since I’ve been reading you for years it feel like I know your whole family! Huge hug! Beautiful!!

  52. KOREAN

    he is cute…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hello Hank..

The Japanese people say, 97% of the world map marks’ Sea of Japan ‘ so give up. But Korean people say, 3% of the world map marks ‘ East Sea’so we will start arguing. It doesn’t take even 20 seconds to turn this. Just sacrifice a little time. Let’s show the power of the Korean netizen to Japan

  53. Keri

Delurking to say…Congratulations, Masons! As a fellow San Fran native, that’s for bringing another one to the Bay. It’s a great place to grow up…and what cool ‘rents he will have.
