Camera Bag Roundup

jillout

I’m looking for a small camera bag, so I did a camera bag roundup for Intel’s Lifescoop site. The brand above was made with scrapbookers in mind, and it’s the closest thing I’ve seen to a camera bag that looks like a purse. Why aren’t there more of those? I feel like such a yutz when I dress up for dinner and then have to carry a nylon sack along.

Anyway, with a great deal of help from Twitter friends, I found some useful, attractive options, so go have a look.

  1. Those other bags look amazing – I have the crumpler 4 million dollar home and often have to put it into a larger bag instead of carrying two bags…still not ideal.

  2. I use the Ortlieb camera insert (http://www.ortliebusa.com/cartgenie/prodInfo.asp?pid=115&cid=2) sometimes paired with the brightly-hued Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Bags (http://www.seatosummit.com/products/display/7), for particularly nasty-looking weather. I usually leave the top rolled down for easy camera access, and then the whole thing goes in a messenger bag, like the Timbuk2 small classic messenger bag. The camera and insert fit so snugly in that bag, with room for another lens or a water bottle, and wallet, phone, pen, and Moleskine.

  3. After having a camera stolen myself years ago, I took to heart the advice of one photographer: keep your camera in a bag that doesn’t look like a camera bag. He suggested a diaper bag, complete with a fake diaper or two. (wad them up as if they’re used if you’re really worried about theft.)

I carry my camera in an insulated lunch cooler. It’s the perfect size to fit a d40 with one kit lens and still carry the other. If I squish, I can even fit in a zoom lens instead (or my wallet and phone). Not the most stylish, but the price is right, and it is *waterproof.*

I’ve been looking at options for dressing up, but I think the real key will be to buy a non-dSLR for fancy occasions where I want to just carry a small purse.
