At SxSW, I did an interview with Michael Nolan. He works with Peachpit, the publishing house that produced No One Cares What You Had for Lunch.
I hadn’t slept in three days, so I was too exhausted to assume my Rich and Throaty Media Voice. Click through to hear the valley-girl lilt that persists into my thirties. For some reason, I always thought that one day I’d just awaken sounding like Maya Angelou. You want world peace, I want the voice of an 80-year-old black woman. We all have our dreams.
Anyway, here you go:
I have the same “California Girl” voice. Everytime I hear myself I wonder who that 5 year old girl is. It’s strange.

Hi! I don’t comment much, but I had to tell you that in my head you have a very sophisticated, cultured voice. Hadn’t realized it until this post, but there ya go!

Aha, that makes sense. My mom has an antiques store so I spent many an hour at yard sales and shops as well.
You sound great!

Your headband is awesome! Where did you get it? WANT!

I agree about that headband. Where did you get it? Also, your voice is very charming as it is. You really can’t tell that you hadn’t slept in 3 days.

Goodness. This is almost as shocking as the time we found out Dooce pronounce the word ”crayon” as “crown.” Love the headband, and I agree your voice is charming and unexpected.

Maggie, you are Heather Armstrong are such inspirations w/ your blogs. I love your voice. You’re one of those people who I see and think, “how fun would it be to hang with her?” You, and Jenna Fischer. π She blogs about Target and I can totally get behind that.

If it makes you feel any better, I will read all your posts from now on in the voice of an 80-year-old black woman. In my head, obviously. Doing that out loud would be silly π

Chirpy! Your voice seems to suit you, I dunno about the Maya Angelou voice, no matter how cool it may be. π

Dude. I totally have the same high pitched voice. Actually, I’m pretty sure it’s even higher. Combined with my very very youthful looks, most people don’t believe me when I state I’m 25.
I think my hopes of growing out of it were just dashed to pieces. But knowing that you are in the same boat is comforting.

I also don’t comment much — but wanted to say your voice in print (and now on video) is so refreshing. I love the list formats lately, especially the “life flashing” moments. I look forward to seeing your next productions! All the best.

Oddly, neither my husband nor I care which way the toilet paper rolls. I guess we were made for each other.

You looked great! Very sophisticated and the glasses are killer!
Wouldn’t change anything about the voice though, I think you sound cool.

I too share your desire for a Maya Angelou voice. Since I sound like a 12 year old.
I did just want to say 2 things 1) I proofread for the company that owns New Architects 2) I do no know how I hang toilet paper. Nor do I care.
Love the videos and the blog!

That is my dream, too. I have the voice of an 11-year-old girl. Ack. Good interview though. And I promise to read your site with Maya Angelou’s voice in my head from now on.

You sound EXACTLY like my sister-in-law and I like her voice, it’s lilting and youthful. In fact, you even look a little like her, so, ummm, yeah…
Excellent interview. I may have to experience SXSW in person one of these years.

Hi Maggie – What happened to most of your 2006 and 2007 archives? Did you remove them on purpose or were they lost? Just curious!

I think you have a great voice and it was a real pleasure interviewing you. As for Tracy who wonders if she and I are related, itΓ’β¬β’s possible I suppose. My Nolan ancestors emigrated from Ireland to southern Indiana in the 1830s-40s.

Count me in as another fan of the lipstick. Your voice sounded great although I did laugh aloud at your dream of sounding like Maya Angelou.

For some reason, when you said your Mom is an antiques dealer, I heard it as “antiques stealer.” Go Mom!
And I love the headband, too.
