In this month’s Esquire, Tom Hanks talks about gaining weight for Cast Away and then losing sixty pounds for the scenes where he’s supposed to be starving:

“Eating everything you want is not that much fun. When you live a life with no boundaries, there’s less joy. If you can eat anything you want to, what’s the fun in eating anything you want to?”

  1. That’s a great comment! I must say that I’m pretty impressed with Mr. Hanks.

    I have to admit, once I learned boundaries in life, relationships etc… I found happiness (it’s all relative). I will always remember my father’s tagline for life “everything in moderation”

  8. true. when there isn’t a limit, things just don’t have the same meaning and value. Estella, I think the Da Vinci int happens right after the Bosom Buddies reunion.

    BTW, haven’t stopped by for a while, enjoyed the new design.

  11. I call shenanigans on Mr. Hanks. When I was pregnant and constantly starving, I ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it, and it never stopped being awesome.

  12. Yes, I agree, it sounds good in theory.

    But, my Nutella-and-Captain-Crunch-on-challah sandwiches beg to differ. I’ve yet to reach my “too much of a good thing” point with them yet.

  13. You know, I wouldn’t have thought it was true either, but I watch what I’m eating whenever I hit the upper limits of my weight-swing, and I enjoy food so much more at those times because I’m really paying attention to the way things taste.

    It makes me remember being a kid with a health-food nut mom. An ice cream sandwich was an electric experience.
