Mighty Thirst: Pineapple Crush

3rd January 2014

Sometimes you want a little snack with your drink.

1/4 Cup pineapple
1 Shot Vodka
Cream Soda

Chop up your pineapple until it’s the size you want for biting. You can also freeze it or use frozen pineapple to ice the drink, or blend the fruit with a little water if you want more pineapple flavor and a slushy texture. Add your preferred pineapple format to the glass, pour vodka over, top with Cream Soda to taste and give it a little stir.

Now turn your heater all the way up, and go find your sunglasses. Ah. Hawaii in January.

Mighty Thirst: Strawberry Fizzy

16th May 2013

Summer is coming for you, and the Strawberry Fizzy is waiting there, poolside. With a New Yorker magazine and the good tortilla chips.

Strawberry Fizzy

3 mint leaves
3 Strawberries
Shot of vodka
Juice of 1/2 Lemon
Ginger Ale

Muddle mint and strawberries in your glass, add ice, vodka, the lemon juice, and top it off with Ginger Ale. Then start making the next one, because someone’s gonna take yours.

Here’s to smelling like coconut, floating on your back until your foot bumps the pool ledge, and spitting cherry seeds into the grass. What are you toasting this week?

Mighty Thirst: Tangelo Cooler

26th April 2013

My intent was to make this taste like a 50-50 bar, and? Nailed it. Here’s how you achieve the effect.

TANGELO COOLER

– Juice of one Tangelo (or orange)
– 1/2 shot Amaretto
– 1/2 shot Cointreau
– 1 shot vodka

Put a few ice cubes in your glass, add the booze, and squeeze in the juice of a Tangelo. Stir until the drink is chilled, sip, and try not to drink the rest in a single gulp. Seriously, maybe have a glass of water first.

Here’s to the water warming up, the light through the trees, and the guy at the fruit stand who always makes sure you get a good watermelon.

Mighty Thirst: Gin and Juice (Box)

6th September 2012

Mighty Thirst: Gin and Juice (Box) | Mighty Girl

I found myself low on mixers this week, and I have a kid. You do the math. Necessity is the mother of god this is good.

Gin and Juice (Box)

• Take three mint leaves and roll them around between your fingers until they’re bruised. Throw them in the glass.
• Add a few cubes of ice.
• Shot of Hendrick’s Gin.
• Juice from half a lemon, then rub the lemon around the rim of your glass.
• Top off with a juice box of Honest Kids Berry Berry Good Lemonade (Brand is very important here because you want the low-sugar stuff. I’m not being paid to say this, obviously. But! Any juice box company that wants to start paying me to mix their juice with booze should call me so we can be zillionaires. Tipsy, responsible, adult zillionaires who have obviously employed child care before embarking on this endeavor. High fives.)

The Mighty Summit is this weekend! So here’s to splashing your feet in a hot tub, feeling small under redwood trees, wrapping yourself in a wool blanket, and laughing until you pee a little.

Mighty Thirst: Café Picante

Mighty Thirst: Café Picante | Mighty Girl

You know how Mexican Hot Chocolate has a little kick? This is like that, but with coffee. And frozen. So nothing like that, except for how the cinnamon schnapps gives it some punch, and how it is delicious.

Throw all this in a blender, and garnish with a little cinnamon sprinkled on top:

• 1 Banana (frozen if you’d like the drink thicker)
• 1/2 Cup Coffee, cold
• 1 Cup Ice
• Shot of Tequila
• 1/2 Shot Cinnamon Schnapps

Good right? I know. And now you finally have a use for all those frozen bananas you’re never going to use to make banana bread. Cheers.

Here’s to breakfast for dinner, friends who go all out for theme parties, and falling asleep when your head hits the pillow. What are you toasting this week?

Mighty Thirst: Toddy Shots

16th August 2012

Toddy Shots | Mighty Girl

This is my spin on a digestif — for guests who aren’t inclined to drink their booze straight, whether to aid digestion or the conversation. It’s strong, intentionally so, but it’s also delicious.

Rim glass with nutmeg and sugar. Add:
• 1 shot Sailor Jerry’s rum
• 1 shot hot Earl Grey tea
• A splash of almond milk (to taste)

Despite the name, do not require that guests drink it off your body, or you’ll have some awkward burns to explain later.

Here’s to museums after dark, feeling healthy and well-rested, and playing it by ear. What are you toasting this week?
