Life List Add: Oysters on Tomales Bay

Last weekend, I went to a birthday party hosted at the Tomales Bay Oyster Company, about 1.5 hours outside San Francisco.

It’s a little shop that sells oysters, clams, and mussels right out of the bay.

You buy shellfish, and then settle into the picnic area with friends and a cooler to barbecue, and toast, and gorge yourself.

Do this, my friends. So much fun.

What have you added to your Life List recently?

  1. We are visiting the bay area in September and I have started a list specific to that vacation. “Bike across the Golden Gate Bridge and into Sausalito for lunch” is on that list. Also “visit a citrus grove.” Both are suitable for life lists but then there’s plenty more that’s just a vacation checklist. I just added ” Oysters and champagne on Tomales Bay” though!

  2. I’ve added: Go to the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival.

I’ve also tweaked a few others. I’d originally put something like “view 100 independent films,” but realized this a) wasn’t much of a challenge and b) didn’t require leaving the house. So I changed it to “attend 100 live performances.”

Also, I’d shamelessly stolen your 1000 Fruits idea, but found that once I got to the produce department I was really more interested in the vegetables and the herbs. But I still wanted to try fruit, too. So now it’s “taste 1000 kinds of fresh produce.”

I also put on “knit a pair of socks,” which I can now cross off as soon as I blog about it. Is it cheating to put something on the list that you have every intention of crossing off almost immediately? I hope not. ‘Cause that’s what I did there.

  3. That looks heavenly!

I recently added “Host a Vintage Party” to mine. It’s like a purse party, except amid the drinks and snacks I’d sell vintage clothes and accessories.

  4. Just returned to the Bay Area after 24 years away. Went to college and didn’t come back until my husband was terminally ill, my daughters are recent teenagers and my sister had a brain tumor. However, I’ve read your blog for years and had one with my friend called 3giraffes. We no longer blog, but I am getting my footing and loving the advice on places to visit. I also loved, but didn’t comment on, your piece about divorce and how it resembles a death. My husband, and emergency room physician was diagnosed with early onset alzheimer’s disease seven years ago. My girls have a whole new reality. While I can’t equate your loss with an immediate death, I can relate to the long, drawn out, hit you at any moment grief kind of pain. One day you feel fine and the next day someone’s hands send you into despair. It doesn’t matter the grief, we all experience it, it would be great if we could just allow the pain to come in and leave when it does. Moving on is not a state of mind it is a process. I am so glad you are recovering and it sounds like in a healthy way.

Thanks for the kind words, Kim. And I’m so sorry about your husband’s illness. Good things for you. -M

  8. Hi, Neat post. There is a problem together with your website in web explorer, may test this? IE nonetheless is the market leader and a good element of other people will pass over your excellent writing due to this problem.
